How to Avoid Bad Smells in Your Home

Keeping your home smelling pleasant throughout the year can be difficult. Opening a window or door in your Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, home allows indoor air conditioning and heat to escape, increases your utility bills, and makes you and your family less comfortable. Opening windows and doors also don’t allow unpleasant scents to escape or improve your indoor air quality. You can avoid bad smells in your home by using an air purifier, switching to natural air fresheners, and maintaining your home HVAC system.

Use an Air Purifier

Air purifiers, also called air cleaners, can remove contaminants such as dust, dirt, pet dander, and pollen from your indoor air. These units can help you eliminate many household smells, and they can remove some types of bacteria from the air. However, they can’t eliminate gases such as carbon monoxide. Use a whole-home model or a less expensive portable air cleaner that works on one room at a time.

Switch to Natural Air Fresheners

Many commercial air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that evaporate at room temperature. These chemicals can cause headaches, eye irritation, sinus problems, and other health ailments. Use natural air fresheners instead of a healthier home that smells better. You can simmer cloves, cinnamon sticks, or orange slices in a pot of water on your stove, use essential oils, or make your own potpourri.

Take Care of Your HVAC System

Have your HVAC system checked by one of the professionals at Air Doctor Services at least once a year to prevent bad smells and poor indoor air quality. You should also change the air filter in your HVAC system once every month. A dirty air filter can spread dust and other pollutants throughout your home.
